Phnom Penh, Cambodia — Cambodia’s capital has earned global recognition after being named one of BBC Travel’s “20 Best Places to Travel in 2026,” marking a major milestone for the country’s tourism sector and signaling Phnom Penh’s rise as a world-class destination.
The prestigious annual list, curated by the BBC Travel team, spotlights destinations that deliver rich cultural experiences while promoting sustainable tourism and supporting local communities. Phnom Penh’s inclusion reflects a growing international appreciation for the city’s cultural depth, rapid modernization, and evolving urban identity.
For decades, Cambodia’s tourism spotlight has largely focused on the ancient temples of Angkor in Siem Reap. However, the BBC notes that Phnom Penh is now stepping confidently out of that shadow, offering travelers a compelling blend of history, contemporary culture, and forward-looking development.
According to BBC Travel, Phnom Penh is “having a moment,” driven in part by the opening of Techo International Airport, Cambodia’s largest infrastructure project to date. The state-of-the-art terminal, featuring striking modern design elements including a giant silver Buddha, is expected to reshape regional connectivity. New direct flights linking Phnom Penh with the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, China, and Japan are positioning the city as an emerging global aviation hub.
Sustainable Urban Transformation
The BBC report also highlights the city’s rapid transformation over the past decade and a half. Once known for having just a single traffic light, Phnom Penh is now gaining recognition for its efforts in sustainable urban tourism and revitalization.
Key developments cited include the Chaktomuk Walk Street, expanded eco-friendly transportation options, and a renewed focus on architectural preservation and revival, all of which are reshaping the city’s image while improving quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
