Phnom Penh, April 9, 2026 — The Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC) was among key stakeholders invited by the Trade Policy Advisory Board (TPAB) to participate in the Multilateral Trade Forum 2026, held in Phnom Penh under the theme “Recalibrating Small States’ Strategy Amidst Global Trade Disorder.”
The forum brought together representatives from government institutions, private sector organizations, think tanks, and academia to address the growing challenges facing global trade, particularly for small economies like Cambodia.
Global Trade Facing Structural Shifts
Participants highlighted increasing instability in the global trade system, driven by geopolitical tensions and weakening multilateral frameworks. The declining influence of the World Trade Organization (WTO) has accelerated a shift toward regional and minilateral trade arrangements, reshaping global trade dynamics.
Recent geopolitical developments, including border tensions in the region, were cited as examples of how conflicts can disrupt trade flows. Officials stressed that peace and stability remain essential for sustaining a rules-based international trading system.
Cambodia at a Critical Transition Point
As Cambodia prepares to graduate from Least Developed Country (LDC) status, the country faces a new phase of economic transformation. The anticipated loss of preferential trade benefits, combined with a changing global trade landscape, presents both risks and opportunities.
Government representatives emphasized that Cambodia remains committed to multilateralism and international rule of law, particularly in light of regional tensions that underscore the importance of cooperation and economic interdependence.

Focus on Resilience and Diversification
Discussions at the forum were aligned with Cambodia’s Pentagonal Strategy Phase I (2023–2028), which prioritizes economic diversification, improved competitiveness, and strengthened supply chains.
The strategy aims to build long-term resilience by developing new growth sectors and expanding market access, ensuring that Cambodia remains competitive in a more fragmented global trade environment.
Promoting Dialogue and Policy Innovation
The forum also served as a platform to assess current global trade trends and explore policy innovations to enhance Cambodia’s trade competitiveness. It encouraged dialogue among key stakeholders, including government agencies, private enterprises, small and medium-sized businesses, and academic institutions.
As global trade continues to evolve, Cambodia’s engagement in multilateral discussions reflects its efforts to navigate uncertainty while strengthening its position in the international marketplace.
