From Waste to Wealth: Cashew Apple Emerges as Cambodia’s Next Agro-Industry Opportunity
Kampong Thom, 2026 — Long overlooked as a byproduct of cashew production, the cashew apple is gaining attention as a promising new driver of value in Cambodia’s agricultural sector, with industry leaders highlighting its potential across food, beverage, and industrial applications.
While global markets have traditionally focused on the cashew nut, the brightly colored cashew apple—often discarded during harvesting—is now being repositioned as a high-value resource. The Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC) says the fruit could form the foundation of a new agro-processing industry in the coming decade.
Expanding Commercial Potential
Experts point to a wide range of emerging uses for the cashew apple, including lifestyle beverages, functional health products, and premium culinary applications. From refreshing tropical drinks to nutrient-rich extracts, the fruit’s high vitamin C content and unique flavor profile are attracting growing interest from both domestic and international markets.
Fresh cashew apple juice, already popular in some regions, is also gaining recognition as a seasonal product with strong commercial appeal, particularly in hot climates.
Research and Innovation Underway
Efforts are already underway to unlock the fruit’s full potential. CAC, in collaboration with leading research institutions, has launched pilot projects to process cashew apple juice into vinegar-based solutions used as foliar accelerators in agriculture.
The Institut de Technologie du Cambodge has also conducted multiple studies exploring innovative uses of cashew byproducts, including:
- Cashew apples as animal feed
- Cashew juice for vegetable foliar applications
- Cashew tree branches processed into wood vinegar for agricultural use
These initiatives aim to promote sustainable farming practices while maximizing the economic value of cashew production.
Toward a Circular Cashew Economy
Silot Uon, president of CAC, says developing the cashew apple market could significantly reduce agricultural waste while creating new income streams for farmers and processors.
“This is not just a byproduct anymore—it’s an opportunity,” Silot notes, pointing to the growing global demand for sustainable and value-added agricultural products.
As Cambodia continues to expand its cashew sector, the transformation of the cashew apple from discarded fruit into a premium commodity could play a key role in building a more diversified and resilient agro-industry.
