Siem Reap, Cambodia — December 3, 2025
The Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC) dispatched two representatives to participate in a specialized training workshop on Child Protection and the Prevention of Exploitation, Abuse, and Sexual Harassment, held in Siem Reap province on December 3 and supported by CAPRED. The event brought together institutions, enterprises, and civil society partners to strengthen safeguards for children and vulnerable groups across various sectors.
According to organizers, the workshop aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of children’s rights, build practical skills to identify and respond to cases of violence or exploitation, and reinforce a culture of safety within organizations. The training also encouraged private-sector actors to adopt and implement comprehensive child protection policies.

The CAC emphasized that it strictly upholds state and international legal principles regarding child rights, stressing that sexual harassment and all forms of child exploitation are unacceptable and must be addressed through immediate legal action.
CAC President Silot Uon highlighted the unique characteristics of Cambodia’s cashew sector. He noted that while some tasks can be mechanized, harvesting ripe cashew nuts still relies heavily on manual labor. “Harvesting is light work that allows individuals to earn income based on their own capacity,” he said.
Silot explained that the cashew harvest season often aligns with school holidays, during which some rural students voluntarily work to earn money to support their studies. He clarified, however, that the majority of workers in the industry are adolescents and young adults, and emphasized that child labor is strictly prohibited within the Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia.

He added that similar youth-oriented seasonal jobs exist in many developed countries, but the CAC remains committed to ensuring that all labor practices comply with national laws and global child protection standards.
The CAC stated that it will continue working with relevant stakeholders to promote ethical labor practices and safeguard the welfare of all individuals involved in Cambodia’s cashew industry.
