Pursat Province — Cambodian authorities and observers have strongly criticized reports in Thai media claiming that weapons and ammunition were discovered at what was described as the “Thmor Da Casino complex,” saying the information is inaccurate and misleading.
According to Thai media reports, Thai Marine engineers said they found weapons and ammunition during an operation at the site. However, Cambodian officials noted that photographs published by Thai outlets clearly show a building marked in Khmer as a Border Patrol Police Station under the Pursat Provincial Police, not a casino.
Cambodian commentators expressed disappointment over what they described as the misuse of journalism to spread false or unverified information and to place blame on Cambodia amid ongoing border tensions. They stressed that responsible journalism requires adherence to factual accuracy, balance, and neutrality.
“In journalism, truth and verification are fundamental,” a Cambodian source said, urging Thai media organizations to review their reporting standards and avoid publishing unsubstantiated claims, particularly on sensitive issues such as border disputes.
The criticism comes against the backdrop of renewed tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border, where both sides have accused each other of actions that undermine stability. Cambodian voices have also rejected claims suggesting that physical actions on the ground, such as the placement of containers or structures, can redefine borders, emphasizing that international borders are determined by treaties and legal agreements, not unilateral measures.
Concerns were further raised about the effectiveness of ceasefire arrangements in border areas. Cambodian commentators argued that, instead of reducing tensions, the situation has led to further disputes, including allegations of damage to civilian property and changes to the status quo on the ground.
Observers warned that prolonged disputes and misinformation could fuel resentment and mistrust between the two countries if not addressed through dialogue, transparency, and adherence to international law. They called on all parties, including the media, to act responsibly and prevent further escalation, thereby supporting the peaceful resolution of border issues through diplomatic and legal channels.
Cambodia has reiterated its position that historical experience shows unresolved territorial disputes can have long-lasting consequences, underscoring the need for restraint, factual reporting, and constructive engagement to preserve peace and stability between neighboring nations.
