KAMPONG THOM, Cambodia — October 25, 2026 — Agrisud International conducted a field mission to Kampong Thom Province on Sunday, October 25, to explore opportunities for developing Cambodia’s cashew sector and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and potential of one of the country’s major cashew-producing regions.
The mission was joined by Mr. Phoeun Kimly, Director of the Siem Reap Provincial Department of Commerce, and was warmly welcomed by Mr. Suy Kokthean, Vice-President of the Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC).
The visit forms part of Agrisud International’s efforts to develop new projects in Cambodia’s cashew value chain. Through direct engagement with sector representatives, the organization seeks to better understand the current situation, identify key challenges, and explore opportunities to strengthen the industry.
Discussions during the meeting covered the organization of the cashew value chain, challenges facing farmers, and opportunities to improve sustainable production, domestic processing, and marketing. The exchange provided valuable insights into the needs of local stakeholders and areas where targeted support could help strengthen the sector.
Both sides recognized the importance of collaboration in supporting cashew farmers and improving the value generated from their agricultural activities. Further cooperation could help smallholder farming families improve production practices, strengthen market access, and benefit from greater value creation across the cashew value chain.
For Cambodia, developing a more sustainable and competitive cashew industry requires coordinated efforts among farmers, processors, traders, industry associations, development partners, and financial institutions. Strengthening domestic processing is particularly important for reducing dependence on raw cashew nut exports and retaining a greater share of the value within the country.
While international organizations such as Agrisud International can contribute through technical assistance, project development, and support for sustainable agricultural practices, access to appropriate financing remains essential for businesses seeking to invest in processing facilities, expand production, and improve their competitiveness.
The field mission marks a constructive step toward identifying potential areas of collaboration between Agrisud International and CAC. Such partnerships could contribute to a stronger, more sustainable cashew sector in Cambodia while creating greater economic opportunities for farmers and other value-chain participants.
